The ongoing US military presence around the globe is not in the interest of the world. Its wars in Ukraine and against Iran indicate its determination to maintain global hegemony. These wars are also currently revealing some limitations to the US’s military capacities.
The Asian region is being harmed by the US’s wars. It is significantly affected by the disruptions to oil and gas supplies, as a result of the war against Iran. There are discussions amongst political classes in this region about possible different security architectures to the US-led bloc promoting conflict with China.
This pursuit of security with peace is important, as the alternative is more warfare, death and destruction.
In this short video, Dae-Han Song interviews Dr Warwick Powell about the US war drive, how the limitations of the US military machine undermine its deterrence capacity, and possible alternative security arrangements for Asia.
Dr Warwick Powell is an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology. His work cuts across the intersection of international geopolitical economy, supply chains, and digital payments. He is a specialist in Chinese political economy. He is the author of “China, Trust and Digital Supply Chains”, “ThermoEconomics in a Time of Monsters” and many peer-reviewed publications. He publishes regularly on Substack (warwickpowell.substack.com). Warwick has worked in government and the private sector, and chairs a trade facilitation and technology R&D group of companies.
Dae-Han Song is a writer and organizer based in South Korea, a nation technically still at war. He works at the International Strategy Center in Seoul, and focuses on building people-to-people solidarity and challenging the logic of militarism and empire on the Korean Peninsula. He is actively involved in movements for peace, reunification, and against the presence of foreign military bases. He is also an associate of the Korea Policy Institute. He is also a member of the international No Cold War collective.
