A drive to war is accelerating across both East Asia and Europe, with the US playing the lead role in arming up a military alliance against China.
In East Asia, Japan is expanding its military and increasing the scope of the official remit of its forces. Other nations in the region are also coordinating their increasing militarization as part of this alliance.
In Europe, NATO states are re-arming for the conflict with Russia, with Germany seeking to build up the largest military force in Europe. Again, the militarization is being led by the US.
In this short video, Biljana Vankovska and Dae-han Song discuss how this war drive is impacting those on the western and eastern sides of the Eurasian landmass and the concerns that this escalation is undermining security in both regions.
Professor Biljana Vankovska is a former Senior Fellow of the Copenhagen Peace Research Institute and the Geneva-based Center for the Democratic control of Armed Forces. She served as a Faculty staff member of the European Peace University in Austria (until 2014). She is a respected academic and peace activist specializing in critical security studies, militarism, international relations and peace research. Based in the Balkans, a region deeply scarred by war, her work is a powerful critique of NATO's role and the global arms industry. She advocates for demilitarization and neutral security frameworks as a foundation for genuine peace. She is also a member of the international No Cold War collective.
